Hurray for first place! In the nosework competition!
Recently a new trend in canine sports has emerged and begun to gain popularity - nosework. What is nosework and does your dog need it?
Nosework is the term used to describe the dog's job of detecting certain odours. This activity was developed by the likes of Ron Gaunt, Amy Herot and Jill Marie OBrien. These people have used their extensive experience of training search dogs to create an activity that can be both fun and educational for companion dogs and their owners.
In noosewalking, dogs learn to search for a particular scent (or smells) and mark their source. They start by looking for a favourite treat or toy, gradually increasing the level of difficulty and adding new tasks as the dog makes progress in learning. Scents such as anise, clove, cinnamon etc. are used. Once the dog is familiar with an odour he will start looking for it, and then the owner will encourage him with a toy or treat.
Nosehawk uses four different types of search: the source of the scent is in a container indoors outside the room and in a vehicle. During the search, the dog develops search excitement and learns basic search skills.
There are now also noose competitions which involve searching in conditions where the handler does not know where the source of an odour is hidden, when several odour sources need to be found, and when the handler does not know exactly how many odour sources to find in a given area (and if they are there at all).
In essence, by doing nosework with your Xolo, you are giving him a chance to develop his natural abilities and learn more about how he perceives the world.
